Creating a Crucible Moment: Building an Integrative Civic Engagement Pathway Between California’s Post-Secondary Systems

Description:

Funded by a Multi-Institutional Innovation Grant, this project represents an innovative effort to institutionalize civic engagement pathways between California community colleges and California State University campuses.  It builds on existing connections between two pairs of institutions—College of the Canyons and CSU Northridge, on the one hand, and Cerritos College and CSU Dominguez Hills, on the other—that boast strong transfer relationships.  Here, however, the goal is not simply to facilitate transfer, but to connect faculty and build resources for civic engagement between the institutions.  Faculty from the paired campuses are working together to co-create curricula around common issues and shared projects and to forge curricular pathways in which students can be engaged seamlessly in project partnerships and academic programs that ‘travel’ across the transfer seam with them.  In the long run, the team hope to create and win system-level support for models that integrate civic learning between the community college and state university systems.
