Bringing It #16: Three Important Invitations From Our Partners
Dear friends,
As you know, we like to highlight the important, innovative work of our partners. In this number of Bringing It, we share announcements from three partners, describing exciting initiatives that you are invited to take part in. These involve goals and values near and dear to the purposes of BTtoP: student health and well-being, engaged learning for underserved students, and civic engagement. Please explore and join in!
The 20X30 Transformathon (June 13)
We’ve written previously about the Network for Improvement and Innovation in College Health, led by our friends Carlo Ciotoli and Allison Smith at NYU. NIICH has brought together a diverse network of change-makers in student health and well-being to launch the 20X30 initiative, with the mission of transforming the health and lives of 20 million college students by 2030. BTtoP is excited to belong to it.
20X30 has visionary goals:
- Improve student wellbeing now to improve their lives for a lifetime
- Remove health related barriers to learning, academic achievement, and overall student success
- Close equity gaps for students who are not thriving
- Inspire and prepare students to become future leaders and engaged citizens who actively build a culture of health and well-being for all
20X30 aims to build an inclusive movement that draws ideas, energy, and participation from students, educators, health professionals, and others. On June 13th, from 12-2pm (Eastern), it will launch a digital “Transformathon,” an interactive virtual convening to collect priorities and connect people interested in co-creating this movement. Participation is free, and the platform is intuitive to use. To learn more about 20X30 and the Transformathon, and to register, please see here.
Please join us in celebrating 20X30!
Great Colleges For the New Majority: 2019 Summer Institute (Charlotte, NC, August 5-8)
We’ve told you in a past Bringing It about the Great Colleges for the New Majority Network (GCNM). GCNM is a consortium of adult-serving colleges and university programs with a particular commitment to engaged, transformative learning for nontraditional students–the new majority of college-goers–and a strong record of success in supporting and graduating these students. (Full disclosure: David is one of the organizers of the Network.)
GCNM holds an annual Summer Institute to share best practices, engage common challenges, and build a community of practice that offers adult learners great, engaged education. The Institute is open not only to programs and colleges in the Network, but to all educators interested in supporting adult, nontraditional students. There is no fee for attending.
The 2019 Summer Institute will take place at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, August 5-8. Save the date, and contact David Scobey ([email protected]) for registration and agenda information.
To learn about GCNM, here is a link to its mission statement, as well as a video of the keynote discussion from the 2018 Summer Institute, hosted by DePaul University and National Louis University in Chicago.
We’ll be in Charlotte this summer for the Institute. Please join us.
Imagining America 20th Anniversary National Gathering (Albuquerque, NM, October 18-20)
Imagining America: Artists and Scholars In Public Life is a longtime partner and friend of BTtoP. IA is a consortium of some hundred academic institutions and cultural organizations, committed to the role of the arts, humanities, design, and cultural practices in fostering democratic civic life and social justice. Its annual National Gatherings are among our favorite occasions for community-building, creative expression, and critical conversation.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of IA’s founding, and the National Gathering will take place in Albuquerque around the theme, Mighty Dreams: Designing and Fostering Belonging in ‘America.’ Imagining America has also issued a Call For Participation and invited submissions by June 7.
Bringing Theory to Practice is delighted to be part of all three of these ventures. Please join us. And as always, thanks for the inspiring work you do.
Warmly,
Caitlin, Mercedes, and David
