Long Island University is a Leadership Coalition Institution. "A committee of faculty members composed of members from each of Long Island University_s major campuses, Brooklyn and C.W. Post, was convened to discuss processes through which curricular transformation could take place. It was decided that faculty teams would be invited to submit plans for creating interdisciplinary, integrated clusters of courses forming common themes that could be taught in innovative ways, and could transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, including bridging traditional arts and sciences disciplines with professional fields of study. To establish a pilot project, a general theme of _learning through community_ was developed with the intention of connecting selected faculty, students, and representatives of the campus_s respective local communities in an engaging experience meant to encourage the application of classroom learning to local problems. Faculty would have opportunities to rethink and reshape their teaching in collaboration with each other, while students would benefit from opportunities to engage in individual and collective civic action outside the classroom."
